Author Profile
Matthew Boase was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1980. He subsequently moved to Brisbane, where he completed schooling and first year Arts at University of Queensland. He then transferred to Malyon College to pursue his theology interest and received two Australian College of Theology accredited degrees, a Bachelor of Ministry (Pastoral Studies) and a Master of Arts (Theology).
Raised in a Christian home, he was converted and baptized at the age of 18. While retaining a fervent belief in God and Scripture, he grew increasingly disillusioned by the hypocrisy so often prevalent in organized religion. This cynicism was intensified by an ongoing struggle with bipolar disorder, diagnosed in his mid-twenties, and a widening circle of unbelieving friends. This led to an intense period of reflection on how to reconcile his theological convictions with a more compassionate social justice worldview. He spent a number of years researching Hell Fiction, while unable to work elsewhere, to address this quest and give voice to his views, having limited other opportunities to do so while dealing with a long term psycho-social disability.
As he is extremely passionate about film, especially the work of directorial greats like Stanley Kubrick, Ingmar Bergman and Alfred Hitchcock, it was natural to use numerous film quotes and allusions into his book to better explain a number of important biblical concepts in a contemporary framework.
Matthew is currently living in Melbourne and seeking a wider audience for his writing.
Matthew's perspectives on the topics in Hell Fiction are somewhat unique, given his lived experience in both theological institutions and as a disability pensioner / NDIS participant with a long-term mental health diagnosis. He has therefore had extensive contact with a wide range of hurting people seeking answers to big questions - the ones that religious tradition has often failed to address. Hence, he will be greatly encouraged to see a diverse range of readers thoughtfully considering the questions and attitudes challenged in the book. He would benefit from the knowledge that his reflections are seriously considered by readers and discussing his perspectives.
Feedback from readers is welcome and can be provided via the Contact Us tab. Matthew is also happy to engage with book clubs or other small group discussions on this work and its themes. The novel is intended to promote respectful discussion of the nexus between important faith, theological and social justice issues. He is not active on social media as he prefers traditional personal interactions, including meetings, telephone and emails. He provides blog posts on any new key events or ideas related to the book as appropriate.
